Life by the Sea

A limited edition set of smocked clothing incorporating fabric printed with Danella’s art in collaboration with clothing brand

Watch out for the collection at Artefino, Makati, Philippines 24-27 August 2023.

The pandemic hit and artist-entrepreneurs Apol Massebieau and Danella Yaptinchay quit the city and moved to La Union. They met there and bonded over many things, amongst them their shared love of surfing and the resulting deepening of their understanding of the sea.

Danella’s acrylic-on-acetate paintings resemble miniature seascapes. They are also a meditation on patience, an appreciation of process, and an exercise in letting go of control. We’d like to think that they are life lessons from the years we just lived through.

 About Good Luck, Humans

Good Luck, Humans is a threadwork studio that aims primarily to nurture an appreciation for human-crafted objects made using the almost-lost art of smocking and hand-embroidery.

Founded in late 2016, we want people to fall in love with handmade products, to appreciate the skill, the discipline, and often the genius that go into their creation. As they fall in love, we want them to embrace a new way of living. A slower lifestyle that is kinder to the planet.

Why we do what we do: We wish to champion the work of artisans who devote their lives to making small things with great care.

We work with smockers from Batangas, home province of our founder Apol Massebieau.

Up till the 1980s, the Philippines had a thriving garments manufacturing industry. The smockers of Batangas worked, making mainly baby clothing for export. Unfortunately, they lost their jobs when many of these factories closed, edged out by competitors from other Asian countries where labor is cheaper.

For four years now, we have been providing employment and creating hand-smocked clothing with them.
